“Mr. Oogie Boogie says there’s trouble close at hand. You’d better pay attention now, ’cause I’m the boogie man!” The devilish Oogie Boogie is featured here in all his villainous glory in this great piece created for Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. This storyboard drawing was rendered by Disney artist Jorgen Klubien in graphite and ink on 8″ x 5.5″ paper. The storyboarding process, in the form it is known today, was developed at Walt Disney Studios during the early 1930s, after several years of similar processes being in use at Walt Disney and other animation studios. This piece was created for the memorable black light musical number “Oogie Boogie’s Song”, seen near the 48:30 mark of the film. Essential in the process of creating effective storytelling for the final product, Jorgen Klubien’s impact on the narrative can’t be understated, and his impact on the film is showcased in his remarkable storyboards.
The Nightmare Before Christmas originated in a poem written by Tim Burton in 1982, while he was working as an animator at Walt Disney Feature Animation. Production started in July 1991 in San Francisco; Disney released the film through its Touchstone Pictures banner because the studio believed the film would be “too dark and scary for kids”. The film was met with both critical and financial success, grossing over $76 million during its initial run. This stop-motion masterpiece was the first animated film to receive an Academy Award Nomination for Best Visual Effects! The film has since been reissued by Walt Disney Pictures, and was re-released annually in Disney Digital 3-D from 2006 until 2009, making it the first stop-motion animated feature to be entirely converted to 3D
