MAURICE SENDAK, (AMERICAN 1927-2012)
INK AND WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, FRAMED AND MATTED TO 23.25″ X 20.75″, 1975
A superb animation concept watercolor painting of “Martin”, rendered in ink and watercolors from “Very Far Away” which was first published in 1962. “Very Far Away” is the second book Sendak both wrote and illustrated. In this story, a young boy with a new baby sibling, must learn to cope with his sudden lack of attention. He goes out searching for ‘very far away’. Martin dresses up in a Sneaky Disguise and dons a mustache and a cowboy hat so that when he goes very far away, no one will recognize him. This stunning piece depicts five Martins in different poses, dressed in his disguise. The piece is unusually large for an original Sendak, plus the use of watercolors makes the art quite scarce. Presented matted framed and glazed in a maple wood frame.
The art by sight is 13.5″ x 10.5″ by sight, framed to a completed size of 23.25″ X 20.75″
SIGNED and DATED by Maurice Sendak lower right “Maurice Sendak / MAY ’75”.
