Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Seas – Jules Verne

1874.1 (489 x 600)

Geo. M. Smith & Company 1874.

First Edition, Second 1874 Printing. Beautiful clean book with the original end papers and a crisp binding. The true first printing of this book was printed by Osgood in 1873. However the Boston fire destroyed all but an estimated 50 copies of this printing so the 1873 Geo Smith printing is considered the next true first edition, with the 1874 printing to be the second printing, this copy is printed by Geo. M. Smith & Company 1874. Fully illustrated with 110 illustrations, 303 pages.

The book is in great condition with vibrant emerald green boards with gilt scenes and titles to the front and spine, and still has the scarce original deep brown coated end papers. The book has benefited from having the spine professionally rebacked with the original cloth laid back down, and presents extremely well. Original tissue guard is present. The book has an owner name to the first blank page, otherwise the interior pages are overall remarkably clean and fresh with a scant few pages with occasional handling marks to the outer margins, but NONE of the usual staining and NONE of the usual foxing. The binding is very tight and square and the book has no edgewear. Unlike most copies of this title which have poor/cracked bindings and loose pages, this book is tightly bound and is quite readable and not fragile. Has a spectacular presentation. Please see many detailed images.

A superb copy of this important Verne title in rare highly collectible condition with the scarce original end papers. Perfect for a Verne collector, presenting well on the shelf with a nice crisp readable binding, and without the excessive wear, and/or broken bindings as is typically found with Verne books.
