The bear is beautifully collaged in papers in shades of browns, beiges and terra cotta tones with watercolor and pen. Signed by Eric Carle lower right “Eric Carle” who included the inscription for the bear of “Grrr”, the art sheet is 12.5″ x 9.5″. Original works by Eric Carle rendered using his “Magical Painted Papers” are extremely scarce, yet it was this technique that he used to create all the illustrations in his picture books.
Presented newly matted, framed and glazed using all archival materials and UV plexiglass with a deep 8-ply mat. The lovely champagne toned frame showcases the art extremely well, creating an important presence on the wall.
PROVENANCE: William Noce (“Bill”, 1956-2020), gift from the artist; by whom given to the vendor, the inscription to Bill can be seen in the final image now neatly hidden behind the mat.
ABOUT ERIC CARLE ART: Unlike many artists and illustrators, Eric Carle did not sell his art, with the exception of his few dedicated pieces going to a close personal friends or vendors. His painted paper originals are exceedingly scarce, however that is the medium he used to create all his illustrations found in his picture books. Other than these pieces, the balance of his personal collection were pledged to The Eric Carle Museum Of Picture Book Art. As such, his original artwork in any form is extremely scarce and only one gallery currently even sells any works of Carle’s. Simple line drawings, such as the one shown in the listing typically sell for $3800 and up unframed, with his more detailed art using his method of painted papers selling for $25,000 and up.
