Secker & Warburg, London, 1949
First Edition, First Printing An outstanding copy with a crisp fine/near fine book with a superb very good red variant dust jacket with the extremely scarce unfaded spine still retaining the majority of the red tones.
Written while Orwell suffered severely from tuberculosis and published shortly before the disease claimed his life, the novel is a work “of hectic, devilish, claustrophobic intensity. nightmarish in the telling” (Clute & Nicholls, 896). In 2005, the novel was chosen by Time Magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. Named as one of Modern Library 100 Best Novels of the twentieth century. “It is quite simply a novel which has changed the world”
The book is in Fine condition with crisp, bright and clean light green cloth boards with red titles to the spine. The boards have sharp corners and no edgewear. The cloth has a very small touch of fading along the outer edges of the cloth, and only a very slight amount to the spine cloth which is otherwise common with this title. The binding is tight and square. The end papers are in clean and in bright condition with no owner names, no bookplates and no inscriptions. The internal pages are clean, bright and flat and crisp with no age toning, no stains, no marks, no writing, no bent pages and no foxing. Beautiful clean, crisp, book internally appearing as unread. Scarce in this condition. Please see images.
The preferred near fine scarce red variant original dust jacket retains the exceedingly impossible to find unfaded red spine with the majority of the red tones present. We have only encountered a few of these jackets with the spine colors still mostly red, as the red jacket is very prone to fading and is normally found with the spine faded to various shades of grey. The Nineteen Eighty-Four jacket is known to be extremely fragile. This jacket benefited from very very slight restoration which was limited to the outer spine tips, and a dime size spot of rubbing to the spine. The jacket has no chips, and no tears, and is NOT price clipped, having a stated price of 10s. net on the front inner flap. The front panel of the jacket has light rubbing and the rear panel has some overall toning. Please see detailed images.
A remarkable crisp, clean copy of this title in the scarce red variant color.
